Racial Justice and Multicultural Ministry

The United Reformed Church celebrates diversity.  By declaring itself a multicultural church, we all share the identity that affirms and embraces the inclusive message integral to Biblical teaching.

So what does this mean for our Synod?

are our churches truly places of welcome?

are we able to offer support to newcomers in our communities -
     migrant

     workers,  refugees and asylum seekers?

what can we do to break down barriers, particularly of culture and
     language?

are there ethnic minority congregations sharing our buildings?

is there opportunity for inter-faith work?

Racial Justice Sunday

… is observed on the second Sunday in September each year - 14th September 2008 - (or choose another Sunday most appropriate for your congregation).  The new resources prepared by the ecumenical Churches Racial Justice Network include Biblical reflections, worship suggestions, activities for young people and, for the first time, additional materials to use at other times of the year - Black History Month, Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter, Mental Heath Week, Refugee Week, and the summer holiday season.  Contact the Racial Justice and Multicultural Ministry office at URC House for a free copy (racial.justice.mm@urc.org.uk ; 020 7916 8655).

Racial Justice Advocates

There are four Racial Justice Advocates in the Synod:

Tunde Biyi  (Witham)

Stephen Broadhurst  (Colchester)

Wendy Cooper  (Ware)

Chris Wright  (Cambridge)

Our role is to encourage and enable you to explore further the issues of racial justice and multicultural ministry, and consider what your church might do to make a difference.

We would welcome invitations to lead worship, especially around Racial
Justice Sunday, or to contribute in other ways to discussions.

We would also like to hear from you and to know what your church is
     doing
in response to the questions raised above.

We would welcome others to join us as Racial Justice Advocates.
