The Synod Children and Youth Development Officer is available to help churches consider the Vision, and to support in exploring ways that might be used to develop, refresh or begin work with children and young people.

Charter for Children in the Church

The ten points:

Charter-for-Children-51. Children are equal partners with adults in the life of the church.

2. The full diet of Christian worship is for children as well as adults.

3. Learning is for the whole church adults and children.

4. Fellowship is for all - each belonging meaningfully to the rest.

5. Service is for children to give, as well as adults.

6. The call to evangelism comes to all God's people of whatever age.

7. The Holy Spirit speaks powerfully through children as well as adults.

8. The discovery and development of gifts in children and adults is a key function of the church.

9. As a church community we must learn to do only those things in separate age groups which we cannot in all conscience do together.

10. The concept of the 'Priesthood of all Believers' includes children.

Churches and Connecting with Schools

The first question to ask is 'why bother with schools?' and extended schools?

Andy Hickford in his book Meltdown in Schools says...

'that if we are not meaningfully involved in schools then we are missing our culture as a whole' and he pleads to Churches to get involved in their local schools. He says schools are at a crisis point, just ask a teacher!

Centres of community

Culturally speaking Churches are not the centre of our communities like they once were. Many Churches are there for hatching, matching and dispatching and often little else. So what would be the centre of our community now, of course it depends where you live, but it seems to me that schools could fit that bill in our rapidly changing society.

The CYDO will help lead the programme and activities for an agreed period of time and provide support and training as required.

The CYDO will continue to offer suitable support as the programme and activities develop and with agreement will visit the club from time to time.

Grants for Children's and Youth Work

Application Submission date for the Resources Committee is at least three weeks before a meeting

(Meeting dates are available to download from the Committee Dates block on all Committee pages - click on the Council and Committees tab)

The Synod Resources Committee will consider grant applications to help churches considering the employment of a Children's or Youth Worker. To begin the process, it is expected that you have a conversation with the Children's and Youth Development Officer (CYDO).

In order for the Resources Committee to consider your application, you will need to submit a number of documents: an Application Form, the Pro Forma Finance Annual Costs form and copies of your latest church accounts. Having involved the CYDO from an early stage, the CYDO is expected to endorse your application. Following a grant award, an annual Appraisal Form will need to be submitted at the end of every year, preferably at its anniversary date, over the period of the grant in order to ensure the release of the next tranche of grant. Please note that the Resources committee will only consider grants of up to a maximum of 10% of the annual cost for a maximum of three years and a maximum total project cost of £25,000. All grants awarded will be subject to the availability of funds.

Consideration will also be given for grant applications to support the development of Children's and Youth Work Programmes in churches. Please discuss the format of your application with the CYDO as no forms are available for this purpose.
